COUNTDOWN: 6 things we want from a Transformers One sequel

Many fans are already claiming Transformers One as the best film in the franchise so far!

That’s for good reason, considering it’s a gorgeous, jam-packed love letter to decades of Transformers gone by. Yet despite all the fanfare and the overwhelmingly positive critical reception, we still don’t know if a sequel will be given the green light. It would be a crying shame if that never comes to pass, as this rebooted world has so much potential for advancing the story of Cybertron and all who live there.

With that in mind, here are 6 things we’d love in a sequel, should one happen!

#6: More of Cybertron life…

We got a fair bit of insight into how the underground world of Cybertron functions, despite the action being contained mainly within the subterranean city of Iacon, and, for a one-hundred-minute animated film, there was a surprising amount of commentary on the planet’s class hierarchy. Although the story mainly focused on the blue-collar crews of miners and their sparse surroundings, there were also glimpses of the more affluent or elite side of society, particularly such as Orion Pax crashing (literally) a swanky party or other such nods. It would be great to expand on these elements in a sequel, showing further cities (assuming they exist) or even more of Iacon and how daily life is now adjusting to the fledgling Autobot/ Decepticon war. With the new factions made up mostly of miners or Cybertron’s High Guard, what will become of the many other citizens not currently affiliated with either side of the conflict?

#5: …and the evolution of the surface

Likewise, exploring Cybertron’s seemingly desolate surface world would be a dream, as so much of it remains a mystery and looks like no other depiction we’ve seen in Transformers media. Parts of the terrain were seemingly capable of terraforming themselves rather swiftly, meaning the vista could have evolved a fair bit by the time a sequel story rolls around. Equally, there is evidence of previous battles with the Quintessons, such as the High Guard base in the first film or old structures like the outpost where our protagonists escape detection from the aliens. These are all fascinating elements that could make for a unique feel in a follow-up, especially if we are treated to more of those scintillating synth-wave vibes!

#4: More familiar faces…

One thing that will be on the tip of any fan’s tongue regarding sequel speculation is surely which classic Transformers characters might show up! One brought us a plethora of known names, from the majority of the 1984 Ark crew to plenty of A-list Decepticons besides. Yet there’s still tons of potential for more to appear in a follow-up, including the likes of Soundwave’s minions, further big hitters from subsequent years of G1, or even unexpected teams such as the Dinobots in one form or another! Sure, some would need a fairly sizeable overhaul to make them work, but that’s part of the fun.

#3: …including nods to other eras of Transformers!

Additionally, a key element of the first film many enjoyed was how it wove in inspiration from other eras of Transformers beyond the original ’80s fare. Be it Dreadwing providing a fairly palpable Generation 2 nod, Airachnid and the Troopers hailing from Transformers: Prime, or the many more hints towards various disparate bits of robots in disguise history, it was refreshing to witness the film pay its dues to more than just G1, and that’s something which should ideally continue in a sequel. Why not throw in characters such as Lockdown or Bulkhead from Animated, Barricade or Blackout of the live-action films, or perhaps even some of the Beast-era bots!

#2: Quintessons…

This next point might sound obvious, given the first film’s closing moments and the rather apparent set-up for a war with the Quintessons in round 2. However, it would be epic to actually see our heroes (and villains) go up against the oppressive aliens next time. We only witnessed the might of one horde of warriors on the initial outing, and that already proved menacing enough to have the story’s ultimate big bad Sentinel Prime quaking, so we can only imagine how formidable the green meanies would be en masse. The species’ creepy, textured and tentacled design was also one of the many visually striking elements seen on screen, so expanding on this and seeing a range of different Quintesson troops would be a true treat!

#1: …and the relationship between Optimus and Megatron!

Ultimately, though, as much as the Quintessons may prove a natural antagonist for the follow-up film overall, the ongoing beef between our two leads surely provides the most meat! After all, things were at peak tension when last they met, with both Optimus Prime and Megatron going on to lay the foundations for their newly-named factions. Yet there’s nothing to say we have to skip ahead to all-out war straight away, as it would be intriguing to explore the rift between the former friends a little more before making them fully-fledged eternal enemies. Perhaps they need to work together against the larger threat of an invading alien race, for example – it would be fantastic fodder for the two to bounce off against one another, treading the line between love and hate as they go. We all know how the relationship sours over millions of years, but at this early stage, a sequel shouldn’t be afraid to live in the fresh wound a little first.

So that’s our list! What are some of your hopes for a sequel to Transformers One?
