2025 is finally upon us, and, as always, we have an upcoming year of new toys to look forward to!
You might expect a bit of a lull following the thrilling highs of the bumper 40th-anniversary celebration in 2024, but based on the upcoming Generations releases we’ve seen so far, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Here are ten toys to get excited about for 2025.
#10: AOTP Generation 2 Grimlock

As inevitable as it may have been, there’s still always some delight in seeing the classic royal blue take on Dinobot leader Grimlock brought back for another spin! True, it may not be the ultra rare turquoise version which also debuted during Generation 2, but this 1990s-themed makeover is arguably the more well-known of the various options, so it makes sense! It’s also another eye-catching outing for the SS86 Grimlock mould and the second deco inspired by Transformers’ sophomore roster. Oh yeah, and there’s another Wheelie too… although actually this one is quite fun as it’s clearly a nod to the 1986 Earl Norem illustrated adventure, The Story of Wheelie, the Wild Boy of Quintesson where the character is seen sporting a blue chest. Neat!
#9: AOTP Armada Red Alert

With the ongoing Generations line delving deeper into Unicron Trilogy territory for inspiration, fans have speculated that a Red Alert would eventually be released – and here it is! This figure captures all the right Robocop vibes and is a great approximation of the cartoon character, especially since it is less bulky than the 2002 toy. Naturally, it has fewer gimmicks and, sadly, no Mini-Con partner in sight, but this release is still hugely welcome.
#8: AOTP Fugitive Waspinator

We’ve mentioned the idea of an Animated Wasp figure before – a few times, in fact! – but now it’s finally set to become reality in Age of the Primes, retooling the Deluxe Bumblebee mould to great effect and with a snazzy new colour scheme. Thus, the wishes of many fans since 2009 have finally been fulfilled (well, kinda), as the original unreleased toy is alive in spirit at least, as indicated by the Hasbro team opting to title this new release as ‘Fugitive Waspinator’ after the Wasp that never was.
#7: AOTP Solus Prime

Solus Prime is a noteworthy new toy for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s a character we’ve never seen in full-size plastic form before (outside of a teeny Titan Master using the name during Power of the Primes), despite appearing in various media for decades now. Secondly, as part of The Thirteen Primes, Solus is canonically the original female Transformer, from which all others derive, so that’s pretty swish. Lastly, it’s refreshing to see a fresh and original design debuting in the Generations line, especially when so much of the output is nostalgia-driven.
#6: AOTP Prima Prime

Continuing from the above, we have another member of The Thirteen, and, in this case (at least in some continuities), the first Transformer of them all! Prima or Prima Prime has appeared in many different forms across various media (with a bot from the original series cartoon even being retconned to represent him). He is commonly shown to be amongst the first (if not the first) Matrix bearers, which makes his debut proper in toy form all the more exciting, considering such a feature is represented here. What’s better, this toy blends all those disparate influences to make a truly intriguing result (even including the head design from the cartoon!), and it looks nothing shy of spectacular.
#5: AOTP Megatronus

Perhaps even more enticing than the above entries is Megatronus, also known by his popular name of The Fallen. However, this is not the Egyptian-themed baddie from the live-action films, but a startlingly faithful recreation of the character’s classic appearance as seen in the 2000s’ Dreamwave The War Within comics! Seeing the original Transformers bad guy done proud at long last is a true treat, not to mention the toy itself looks breathtakingly good, so expect this one to be popular! And no, it is *not* an SS86 Megatron pretool.
#4: AOTP Star Optimus Prime

Next up we have what may be the star of the show – no pun intended, I promise! Yes, it’s our new Titan class effort, although in this case, it’s a little smaller than what perhaps typically comes to mind (and all the better for it!). Regardless, Star ̶C̶o̶n̶v̶o̶y̶ Optimus Prime looks absolutely stellar in just about every way, appears to be packing plenty of play value and is sure to be a must-buy for fans of the original 1991 toy and, indeed, anyone who likes rather stunning robots in general. Oh, and he comes packaged with a Micromaster Hot Rod, so what’s not to like?
#3: Studio Series Constructicons

Excitement for the much-hyped Studio Series Devastator set was at fever pitch by the time the toys were finally unveiled, and although opinions on them have been coming thick and fast in the time since (such is the Internet), the consensus seems to largely be that they were worth the wait! Sure, it’s not as sizeable as the well-known Combiner Wars equivalent, but with that release turning a decade old this year (yep!), it’s great to see a new attempt in the offing. However, with only the first few team members available for pre-order at present, it’s going to be a while before we can assemble the full Big Man, but still, this is one roster of green meanies that we can’t wait to get in hand.
#2: AOTP Aerialbots

If there’s been plenty of debate about the merits of the SS86 Constructicons, then that’s nothing compared to the discourse surrounding the Age of the Primes Aerialbots since their reveal! The individual robots have been scrutinised to death for one thing, but it’s the ‘faux’ body solution for the combined mode that has really got fingers tapping on keyboards. For our money, it’s a reasonable solution and one that delivers something very different to the last mainline attempt at the character during 2015’s Combiner Wars. Besides, it’s entirely in keeping with how Leacy Menasor was handled, so it’s not like we should have expected anything else! Let’s hope that once the Aerialbots finally land they’ll be able to win everyone over, because this set certainly has a lot of potential.
#1: Generations Selects Trypticon

Our final entry today was certainly a BIG surprise when it was dropped right at the end of December! Seriously, absolutely no one had ‘random repaint of Titans Return Trypticon’ on their bingo card, although the product itself could not be looking more enticing. The mould is a certified banger anyway, but that updated colour scheme does wonders for it, dialling up the saturation on the pink and teal highlights and opting for a significantly darker grey body overall. The eventual price point may end up being offputting considering the levels of deep discount the original ended up going for, but still this is one delicious dinosaur and has certainly caught some major intrigue so far.
So that’s our list! Are you excited for these toys?
